week ten, studio performance
Looking at the aims and learning objectives for this module,
I believe that I have achieved most of the criteria and I have also seen areas
for improvement in the final weeks of the course. Throughout the course, I have
analysed and evaluated a variety of works by my chosen choreographer, Crystal
Pite and have taken inspiration from her fluid and expressive movement. I have
also explored techniques that I have learnt in previous tasks, such as
improvised movement and symbolic sequences that have intent and purpose behind
them to help me to create and design an original dance. Furthermore, I have
looked at choreographic devices such as repetition and augmentation, as I have
repeated the beginning of my piece at the end, breaking apart the sequence with
interruptions of new movement and aiming performing them with more dramatic and
wide arm lines and impactful execution. Although I have maintained a focus on
my stimulus through the quality of my movement, after my studio performance in
this week’s session, I have received feedback encouraging me to translate these
emotions into my facial expressions with much more commitment. Now that I have
had the opportunity to perform my piece with an audience and had this filmed, I
feel much more confident to push myself with my expressions and I found it beneficial
to experience the anxiety and adrenaline that came with this experience. I have
also been told that to enhance my work, I need everything to be much bigger,
striking and passionate, which can be achieved through using a deeper plie,
extending my leg lines to the limit and executing my sharper movements with
attack and force. When watching back my studio performance, I could see that
the dynamics that I felt I was achieving when dancing didn’t completely
translate to the audience, and so a main priority for me in my final week of
preparation will be to expand on the movement that I have already created by committing
completely to the message I am portraying without hesitation or holding back.
Here are the corrections that I gave myself when watching back my studio performance:
Here are the corrections that I gave myself when watching back my studio performance:
In previous tasks, my peers have encouraged me to think about how the inspiration from my chosen choreographer is going to enhance my work and so my choreography is mainly driven by my expressive port de bras and open, expansive chest and neckline that featured in Pite’s work. This is so far the most successful element of my choreography and I think that it will be enhanced even further once I work on the opposing, weighted and powerful dynamics that my piece is currently lacking.

You have laid out your blog very clear so its easy for me to read. I love how you have included a diagram of your energy level sheet as this will make your choreography stronger, as you will know where to producuce the most power. well done!
ReplyDeleteYou mentined that you need to work on your dynamics. How will you do this?
I will work on my dynamics by using the video of my studio performance to my advantage to identify areas which can be executed with more power and depth. After, I will apply this by slowly going through my dance and completing each movement with commitment and using impulse to create a stronger contrast between the attack and releases within my choreography.
DeleteTo explain this further, I have now added a photo of the notes that I took when watching back my studio performance, giving myself areas for improvement and the main things that I want to work on in my final rehearsal.
DeleteI find this blog very clear to read due to the vast amount of detail you went into as well as your use of photos. You stated you have met most of the criteria in this blog, which criteria have you met and how did you do this?
ReplyDeleteThankyou Sadie. I have 'critically analysed and evaluated a variety of works' by Crystal Pite through my reviews of her work and further research that I have done into er choreographic process. I also believe that I have 'demonstrated the application of theories, processes, devices and technical dance skills' by incorporating techniques that I learnt in previous tasks in this course to help me to choreograph my piece. (quotations came from 'learning outcomes' on module sheet)
DeleteThis is a very clear blog post covering a huge amount of content in detail, well done. I enjoy how you have used visuals to enhance your writing as this adds depth and detail to your work, as well as showing your self analysis and critique. You mentioned what you should work on before the assessment which clearly shows your critical eye. Was there anything you were particularly happy with when watching your piece back? Do you think your strengths will motivate you to create more?
ReplyDeleteThankyou Storm. I was proud of how I dealt with this experience, as I was able to handle my nerves and keep calm in order to perform as best as I could and remember all of my choreography. When watching back my performance, I was happy with the fluidity of my movement because this was something that I tried to focus on and I thought that as a whole my dance was engaging and showed a variety of levels. I now feel like I have a good base of choreography and I am motivated to work on it in the following week in order to enhance it further by thinking about my performance and dynamics.
DeleteHow did the Studio Performance create an impact on your creative process? By using your video to reflect on your solo, are there any last-minute additions and/or changes edits you feel may be required to your work?
ReplyDeleteThis is a well-considered post and I feel you have shown a clear understanding of the topic, I feel the work you have produced so far is possibly around the 2:1 criteria. If you are looking to progress to a 1:1, it will be worth considering the quality of your reflective skills, research, ability to answer the questions and critical thinking. By demonstrating the ability to develop plans of action and integrating received knowledge of practitioner-based processes with evidence of varied personal research as well as critically reflecting your process (showing awareness of own strengths, weaknesses, and developing ability to compare alternative theories and analytical approaches) and considering possibilities, and their consequences to develop appropriate actions, it will offer new questions for your consideration and may help you identify areas you might not have considered with within your project. Can you ensure you have evidence of these areas within your work.
Miss Norman
The studio performance was a useful opportunity for me to rehearse my solo in the space that I will have for my final assessment and allowed me to experience coping with the nerves that come with performing, which I believe will be a valuable thing to have gone through before my assessment. Yes, I watched back my video and in this blog I have shown a photo of a list in my notebook of any last-minute additions or changes that I planned to work on in my final session. I feel as though by adding these changes, my piece wil be much more dynamic and engaging. Thankyou for your comments, I will try to apply this.
