You have clearly thought a lot about your piece and how you will convey your idea. I am interested to see your ideas put into action as I feel they are well prepared and unique. What is your next step in your choreography?
Thankyou Ella. The next step in my choreography is to continue creating my piece, as I would like to have a good amount of movement created before refining my work. I would like to create some more movement through improvisation, as I feel that this will be a successful way for me to move freely and without overthinking, which has been a struggle for me throughout the course.
You spoke clear in your vlog and this allowed your ideas to come across well. I like how you are choreographing with feelings like your chosen choreographer Crystal Pite, what impact do you think this will have on the audience? And why do you find it powerful?
I think that by incorporating Crystal Pite's style of expressive movement it will help me to project the emotions that I hope to portray in my piece because they are so expansive and passionate. I find her movements powerful as they are so emotive and engaging and she explores a variety of isolations in different parts of the body.
I like how you have stated that you are not going to include movements which are technically difficult and you are going to include movements that show off your own talent. How do you think this will benefit your solo?
I think that this will benefit my solo because it will allow my movements to be executed much more naturally and comfortably, which will mean that I can focus more closely on my performance. Furthermore, my choreography will compliment my body and the way in which I move, which will make them look much more fluid and confident. This will ensure that the meaning behind my piece will hopefully come across more powerfully to the audience.
In today’s lesson we researched two other key practitioners - Wayne McGregor and Crystal Pite. We analysed videos showing their choreographic processes (Rehearsing Genus), (Can art affect change?) and this inspired us to try another creative task using their methods. I was particularly inspired by their attention to detail throughout their choreography and the intense and thorough thought process behind each of the movements that they created. In this task we had to recreate the movement of rain on a window. When watching the video of this, we considered how a singular rain droplet would move, any sudden changes in speed as a raindrop ran down the window, or the patterns created when different raindrops connected with each other. To begin with, we improvised on our own, thinking about the fluid movements of a singular raindrop. I found this quite difficult because our inspiration for the movement was very abstract and it was challenging to have to little interaction when...
At the start of this process, I set out to create a powerful and emotive piece based around Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID), looking at the feelings created for the affected person due to the symptoms that they have to face. I believe that I achieved my aim of showing feelings of security contrasted with uncertainty and desperation for stability, as each of my movements were created with these feelings in mind. In my final performance, I challenged myself with my projection of emotions, as I attempted to show much more distress and confusion through my expression, which hopefully helped to convey my message to the audience in an engaging way. Although I became lost at what came next at one stage of my choreography, I was proud that I managed to pick it up again and confidently continued with my solo. Ultimately, I enjoyed the performance experience, and felt that the nerves and adrenaline that came with having an audience to be very beneficial, as it pushed me to complete my piece...
