week two, choreographic devices
In this lesson, we started by getting into pairs and
combining either our name or number sequences from last week. However, we
developed these by adding four choreographic devices to our pieces to make them
more dynamic and exciting. Storm and I chose to add canon, retrograde, fragmentation
and embellishment, which gave our sequences more contrast and energy, due to
the changes in execution, speed and space used. At first, we struggled to know
which elements of our choreography to enhance, so we started by running through
our sequence and added embellishments such as shoulder and head rolls which quickly
transformed our simpler movements into something more unique and interesting.

We were then given some information about what our
characteristics are according to our star signs, and as a Leo my personality
traits are charitable, proud, reflective, loyal, arrogant, vainglorious,
indulgent and wasteful. Using this information, we had to choreograph a short
piece which reflected these qualities, using at least four choreographic devices
to do so. I focused on my projection and used argumentation to make the two
walks forwards in the opening of my piece more powerful and confident, to help
convey a Leo’s proudness and self-assurance. I also used contrast to show the gentler
side to a Leo, by repeating a forward reach with my arms, bringing my hands to
my heart and slowly circling my head. These repeated motifs of compassion and
delicacy contrasted the sharper qualities of a Leo well and in my future
choreography lessons, I think it would be interesting to explore further
creating a piece using two conflicting emotions or adjectives. I found it very
useful to have a list of words in front of me to spark my ideas for choreography
and it pushed me to ensure that all my movements had a purpose and an intention
behind them. To improve my work, I would like to focus on how I could use my
facial expressions to further convey the emotions that I am trying to project,
and I would also like to think more about how sudden changes in speed could
develop my choreography.
Zodiac Solo:

You have included some interesting points and have clearly structured the content of your blog.
ReplyDeletePlease think about the following points:
- More detail on the various choreographic devices we looked at during class is needed . (you could insert photos of the hand-out to illustrate this).
- What is the purpose of integrating choreographic devices and the exercise set in class?
- How did the integration of four choreographic devices affect your final phrase of movement?
- Did you notice any strengths or weaknesses? If so, how will you develop your weaknesses/ how did your strengths assist you within the task?
- Were you successful with the task set?
- Which choreographic devices did you use and why?
- What was the purpose of performing these tasks in front of the rest of the class?
What you have written about your zodiac task is good.
Think about:
- Do you think the purpose of the movement successfully came across to the audience?
- How did you find this creative task? Interesting? Easy? Difficult? Why?
- How did the allowance of more time affect the final product of your phrase?
- Did you notice any strengths or weaknesses? If so, how will you develop your weaknesses/ how did your strengths assist you within the task?
- Were you successful with the task set? Was it readable to the audience?
You have clearly labelled your videos however please can you also take a look at uploading the videos as one file rather than two.
This is a very good piece of writing, well done!

I have edited my blog to include a photo of the hand-out we received, which gave us a list of choreographic devices and their definitions to explore and choose to include in our sequences. By integrating choreographic devices into our piece we were able to explore changes in execution, speed and space used, which ultimately made our sequences more varied and exciting. Storm and I worked well together as a pair and our willingness to try each other’s ideas meant that we were able to put together a variety of additions to our original sequences. Performing our piece in front of the class meant that we also focused on our projection and expression and it gave opportunity for the class to try and identify the devices that we chose to use.
DeleteFor our zodiac solo we were given a week to develop our pieces and so I had a lot more time to think about the intention behind each movement and so I think the attributes of a Leo came across well when I performed to the class. I found this creative task very interesting and realised that I had much more ideas for my choreography by having adjectives/themes in mind as inspiration. My ability to think about phrases of movement which could symbolise certain thoughts or emotions helped me in this task, however I can still see that there is space for improvement in my facial expressions and performance to help convey the emotions that I am focusing on.
I have also now made sure that my videos are uploaded as one file rather than two.
Both of your pieces were very good and I liked the choreographic devices used, did you find these difficult to incorporate into your pieces? In your zodiac sign piece you spoke about how you wanted to project to the audience, why was this?
ReplyDeleteInitially I found it difficult to incorporate the devices because they felt quite forced after I had already made my sequence. However, once we started trialing a few different ideas I found it easier to experiment with the devices. I wanted to project more in order to keep engagement with the audience, so that the adjectives and emotions that I wanted to portray would come across. Thankyou for your comment.
DeleteI really enjoyed both pieces of choreography and you portrayed the description of you zodiac sign clearly in your phrase. Will you use a similar technique when it comes to creating your solo? And perhaps any choreographic devices that may appeal to you to use later on in your own choreography?
ReplyDeleteThankyou, yes I hope to use the same technique of having a list of adjectives as inspiration, as it helps me to ensure that all of my movements have a purpose. I like the idea of combining repetition with augmentation to make an initially simple movement of sequence gradually become more dynamic and exciting.
